KUOW and Humanities WA Present “The Grand Old Party: From Reagan to Trump”

The campaign message “It’s morning in America” helped lead to a landslide for Reagan in 1984, and embodied the optimism people came to associate with the Republican party. Thirty years later, a darker message—sometimes referred to as “midnight in America”—has become the rallying cry around the party’s nominee Donald Trump.

Join KUOW and Humanities Washington for a conversation about the history and current state of the Republican party. How did the party evolve from morning to midnight? Is fear the best way forward? What long-lasting impact will Trump’s candidacy have—and not have—on the GOP? How do his policies differ from Republican orthodoxy? And how should the Republican establishment behave toward Trump now and after the campaign?

Explore the past and future of the party of Lincoln, with panelists including Slade Gorton, former U.S. senator from 1981-1987 and from 1989-2001; Matthew Manweller, professor of political science at Central Washington University, a state representative, and former chair of the Kittitas County Republican Party; Diane Tebelius, former chair of the Washington State Republican Party from 2006 to 2007 and former federal prosecutor; and Sam Reed, former Washington Secretary of State and current chair of Mainstream Republicans. Moderated by KUOW’s Ross Reynolds.

A huge thank you to all Republican candidates who have run for office this year, it’s a ton of work and  time commitment, your efforts are appreciated whether or not you move forward to the general election.

    Lois Gustafson & Toby Nixon

    A special word from Lois:

As most of you know, I’ve coordinated support for our deployed troops throughout the WAR on Terror. Each Christmas we send homemade Santa Sox for the service members who don’t receive a Christmas package from home. This year a Command Chaplain requested 500 stockings for his “forgotten soldiers” on bases and outposts scattered around eastern Afghanistan. If you would like to show your support for a lonely soldier by making some stockings, please contact me lygus@msn.com. Thank you!!
